Η Κύπρος ενέπνευσε τον μεγάλο Σοβιετικό ποιητή ύστερα από επίσκεψη του στον προσφυγικό καταυλισμό Τσιακκιλερή το 1977 μαζί με τους Έλλη και Πανίκο Παιονίδη. Έπειτα από την συγκινητική συνάντηση του με τον διαλεκτικό μας ποιητή Παύλο Λιασίδη, έγραψε το ποιήμα "Περιστερώνα" το οποίο μεταφράστηκε την ίδια μέρα από την Έλλη Παιονίδου και την επόμενη μέρα δημοσιεύθηκε σε όλες τις εφημερίδες.
