Ο Edward Kamau Brathwaite, ήταν ποιητής και ακαδημαϊκός των Μπαρμπάντος, που θεωρείται ευρέως μία από τις σημαντικότερες φωνές της λογοτεχνία στην Καραϊβικής. Πρώην καθηγητής Συγκριτικής Λογοτεχνίας στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Νέας Υόρκης, επίσης ήταν ο Διεθνής Νικητής του 2006 του Griffin Poetry Prize για τον ποιητικό του τόμο Born to Slow Horses.
Με τη Έλλη Παιονίδου γνωρίστηκαν το 1994 όταν o Brathwaite είχε παραλάβει το βραβείo Neustadt International Prize for Literature και η Έλλης ήταν μέρος της κριτικής επιτροπής.
